"Prayer is a wonderful and frustrating mystery."

Alice Fryling in The Art of Spiritual Listening.

Her first memory of prayer was a petition for God to bring the ice cream truck. As she grew older, she became frustrated and stuck by her prayer failures. Today, she thinks of prayer as sitting in the presence of God and noticing the longing of her heart. In this episode, we ask the question: Is prayer about changing my circumstances or about changing me?

Alice in Wonderland says, "Now let me think.

Am I the same person I was this morning? I don’t think I am!"

And that’s the way prayer is for me. - Alice Fryling

Alice Fryling shares her personal experience of prayer as both a frustrating mystery and a hopeful place of change. Alice Fryling is a spiritual director, enneagram teacher, and author. Her books have sold over a half million copies and are published in over ten languages. They include Mirror for the Soul: A Christian Guide to the Enneagram, Seeking God Together, and The Art of Spiritual Listening.

Alice and her husband Bob have two married daughters and four grandchildren.

The episode concludes with a prayer exercise for sitting in God's presence with our fears based on the story of Jesus calming the sea.
